As humans we have a connection to animals who walk among us or to the ones that live in our imaginations. Whether it’s a pet or a sprit we bond with, animals are sentient beings that make our world whole. Animals are a part of our everyday life and we honor them with a curious eye in this exhibit.
To explore this kinship, our exhibition features three vibrantly embroidered textiles from Otomí, an ensemble of alebrijes or Oaxacan wood carvings, and mythic creature masks that will evoke questions from their admirers. In Mexico Dreams Animals you will find winged, horned, four-legged and multi-colored creatures in each of the three galleries. We begin with the brilliant Otomí textiles that were patiently created by the Otomí people, who are one of the largest and oldest indigenous groups in Mexico. The bright colors of the textiles will warm the spirit and make your eyes dance around its large canvas. And study the blue textile carefully in gallery three, as new insects or flowers will pop out at you. Alebrijes were born by the imagination of Pedro Linares, Mexico’s great papier-mâché artist. His innately artistic mind summoned these fantastic and sometimes obscure creatures, and he made them a reality. The animal masks featured in Mexico Dreams Animals remind us of our animal spirits that many people believe are guiding us on this ethereal planet. They also reflect the adventurous spirit of Mexico and its people. Both the Mayans and the Aztecs believed humans had animal spirits and that belief has continued. Many Mexican believe everyone was born with a spirit of an animal who is responsible for protecting and guiding us. They Mayans call this spiritual twin a nahual, while the Aztecs call them a naualli. We hope your animal spirit walks beside you during your exploration. |
Como humanos, tenemos una conexión con los animales que caminan entre nosotros o para los que viven en nuestra imaginación. Si se trata de una mascota o un espíritu con quien vincularse, los animales son sensibles que hacen nuestro mundo entero. Animales son un parte de nuestra vida cotidiana y les honramos con un ojo curioso en esta exposición.
Para explorar esta relación, nuestra exposición empieza con tres textiles de Otomí que están bordados vibrante, un conjunto de alebrijes, tallas de madera Oaxaqueña y máscaras de criaturas míticas que evocaran preguntas de sus admiradores. En México Sueña Animales se encuentras las criaturas aladas, con cueros, de cuatro patas y multi-colorados en cada uno de las tres galerías. Masks
Masks have belonged to the cultural tradition of Mexico for millenia. The earliest known mask, carved to resemble a coyote, was crafted from the vertebrae of an extinct species of llama sometime between 12 and 10,000 BCE. In ancient Mexico, masks served many cultural and religious utilities, including providing a cover for the faces of deities, priests, warriors, and sacrifices. They functioned as funeral masks, divine offerings, and in a variety of ritual ceremonies and dances. In pre-Christian Mexico, every child was paired with an animal counterpart, or tona, on their day of birth. The indigenous people of Mexico believed that the fate of a person and their tona remained forever entwined. What befell one half would happen to the other -- even physical injury. Some, like priests and rulers, were believed to possess the ability to transform into their counterparts. Tona belonging to gods, such as jaguars, inspired particular reverence. Although the Spanish missionaries who came to the new world attempted to erase all traces of this belief in a human/animal duality, vestiges remain in the mask-making traditions of contemporary Mexico. For the prehistoric peoples of Mexico, animals provided not only materials and a means of survival, but also a crucial source of inspiration. |

Hace miles años que las máscaras han sido una parte vital de la tradición cultural de México. La primera máscara conocida, tallada en forma de coyote, fue tallada en las vertebras de una especie extinta de llama, entre los años 12,000 y 10,000 antes de la era común. Animal Masks
Many of the animals most commonly found on today's masks symbolize powerful and ancient beliefs. Although nuanced meanings behind many of these animals were lost during colonization, crucial portions find expression in contemporary masks. Jaguars continue to be one of the most popular mask subjects, and retain their association with royalty and divinity. Snakes, another commonly depicted creature, possess deep ties to pre-Columbian culture in all of South America. In masks, snakes are most often placed in lieu of hair, underscoring the similar flowing qualities of snakes, water, and hair. Lizards are also frequently depicted, and represent the phallus, sexuality, and lust. These symbols in turn can be associated with abundance. Toads and frogs are often depicted in the process of being swallowed by human mouths, perhaps due to the association between mouths, caves, and water. During the feast of the Aztec god Atamalqualiztli, worshippers swallowed live frogs and snakes. Masks are not only a manifestation of precolonial culture, but reflect the presence of both European and indigenous peoples. In colonial times, masks began taking on pale, rosy features to resemble European individuals. Old gods gained horns and were conflated with Christian devils. The combination of these two belief systems transformed Christian devils into trickster figures representative of chaos and uncertainty instead of pure evil and temptation. The mask-making conventions of today reflect a varied cultural landscape, and remain a truly unique Mexican art form. |
Máscaras de Animales
Muchos de los animales que se encuentran comúnmente en las máscaras de hoy en día simbolizan creencias podereosas y antiguas. Aunque se perdieron los significados matizadas durante la época de colonización, partes esenciales se expresan en las mascaras contemporaneas. Los jaguars siguen siendo uno de los temas más populares de la mascara, que aún conservan su asociación con la realeza y la divinidad. The Evolution of Alebrijes
Although alebrijes are synonymous with the Linares name, they have become such a large part of Mexican culture and art that their creation has spread to other places, most notably the state of Oaxaca, and other media. Using wood from copal trees native to the region, artisans in the small Oaxacan towns of San Martin Tilcajete, La Union, and Arrazola, among others, carve and paint elaborate creatures that now sell for hundreds of dollars in the international market. The artisans claim inspiration from sources as diverse as real animals to exotic images from magazines, as well as the unique workings of their own imaginations. Oaxacan woodcarving thrives as a family affair—more often than not, multiple family members take part in the creative process. The very young and very old sand the piece, the men are entrusted with carving the wood, the women paint it, and everyone influences the final product. As prominent Oaxacan carver Joaquin Hernandez Vasquez says of his own children, learning the art and continuing the family’s work "is in their blood." |

Alebrijes
These fantastical and colorful creatures, known as alebrijes, sprang from the mind of Pedro Linares while he endured the throes of a feverish delirium around 1936. His visions of bizarre and sometimes terrifying creatures inspired him to recreate them when he "returned to this side of death." Linares dreamt of a strange place resembling a forest and suddenly, rocks, clouds and animals turned strange, and odd animals appeared—a donkey with butterfly wings, and a rooster with bull horns. All of them were shouting just one word: "Alebrijes!” And every animal was shouting louder and louder: "Alebrijes, Alebrijes, Alebrijes!” The word has no meaning in any language, but it was etched in Linares’ memory, along with visions of the strange animals. Already well known as a papier maché artist, Linares shared his dream creatures through his art, and a new Linares family tradition began. The Linares family customarily built holiday and ritual masks, toys, and other figures out of papier-mâché, including giant Judases to be ritually burned during Semana Santa, or Holy Week. Pedro Linares, trained in these techniques, focused his skills on bringing his dream creatures to life. His alebrijes crossed the bridge between folk art and fine art, bringing international renown to not only the Linares family, but also the practice of making alebrijes. Pedro received the National Arts and Science award in the Popular and Traditional Arts category, the highest decoration to artisans granted by the Mexican government. In 1990, two years after receiving this coveted prize, Pedro died at the age of 86. His sons and grandsons continue to carry on and expand his legacy into the twenty-first century. |

The Otomí People
The Otomí people of South America are one of the continent's oldest societies, having preserved their unique culture through the eras of various ruling civilizations, such as the Olmecs, Toltecs, Aztecs, and European Conquistadors. Their survival depended on movement; for this reason, no complete histories of the Otomí people are known. In fact, the name Otomí derives from the Nahuatl language and is said to mean “Cazadores que llevan flechas,” or “Hunters who carry arrows,” and yet another translation is that it derives from the Nahuatl word otomitl, which is thought to come from totomitl, or “shooter of birds.” The Otomí call themselves Ñuhmu or Hñähñu, depending on region and dialect. Today the largest communities of Otomí people exist in La Huasteca Mountains and the Mezquital Valley in the states of Pueblo and Hidalgo. Smaller communities remain in the states of Mexico, Tlaxcala, Michoacán and Guanajuato. Approximately half of those who identify as Otomí still speak at least one of the several dialects of their indigenous language. Many Otomí today support themselves through the creation of folk art. Papel amate, a traditional bark paper, is a common Otomí artisanal craft that was started by curanderos, or healers and shamans. These curanderos would skillfully cut out human, animal and mythological figures used in healing ceremonies to encourage fertility for the animals and crops. The process has remained unchanged for thousands of years; strips of bark are pounded together to create a flat paper used for myriad purposes. The Otomí are also renowned for their fine woodcarving, detailed beadwork, and exquisite embroidery. |

Otomí Textiles
Since pre-colonial times, the Otomí have practiced the art of textile embroidery, decorating their clothing with elaborate depictions of flowers, animals, and geometric symbols. Not only meant to be aesthetically pleasing, these designs also contain potent cultural meanings. Animals, traditionally the bearers of important news, cascade through the fabrics side by side with four- and eight-pointed stars that represent the cardinal directions. The designs seen on the Otamí textiles featuring various native and non-native animals, are based on legendary drawings on the ceiling of a local cave. As is often the case in modern folk art, history, time-honored skills, spirituality and imagery have been adapted to facilitate survival in the modern world. In the mid-twentieth century, Otomí women began embroidering pieces of white commercial cotton for outside markets. Using fabric cut in all sizes, from table runners to bedspreads, Otomí women use pencils to sketch figures onto the cotton by hand. This freehand technique, when completed with finely practiced skill, results in balanced and organically rendered compositions. The shapes are permanently wedded to the fabric by stitching them with embroidery thread imbued with a rainbow of color. To conserve these fabulous threads, Otomí women use a distinctive and economic form of satin stitch that does not travel across the reverse of the pattern. These innovations have allowed for the survival of Otomí traditions. As these skills are passed down between generations, they encourage not only economic survival, but also creativity and ingenuity. |
Los Textiles de Otomí
Desde los días pre-coloniales, la gente de Otomí han practicado el arte de bordando textiles, decorando su ropa con representaciones elaboradas de flores, animales y símbolos geometricos. No solamente para hacer la ropa más agradable a la vista, estos diseños transmiten también significados culturales poderosos. Animales, por tradición portadores de noticias o mensajes importantes, parecen caer en cascada sobre la tela, uno al lado de otro, entre flores o estrellas con cuatro y ocho puntas que representan los puntos cardinales. Los diseños que se ve en los textiles de Otomí exhiben diferentes animales—nativos y no nativos, y son basados en dibujos de una leyenda pintado en los cielos de una caverna local. Como pasa muchas veces en el arte popular modern, la historia, las habilidades tradicionales, espiritualidad y imagines han sido adaptados para facilitar supervivencia en el mundo contemporaneo.
